Nation Media Group-owned TV station NTV has alleged that its signal has been switched off by the Communications Authority of Kenya. The statement comes minutes after CA ordered all TV and Radio Stations to stop live coverage of the ongoing Gen Z protests across the country. In a statement on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, NMG described the move as unconstitutional. The media house has argued that the CA’s action is in violation of Article 34(2) of the Constitution, which protects the independence of the media and prohibits state interference in journalistic activities. NMG has insisted that the regulator lacks the mandate to police content, pointing to a recent high court ruling that placed the role under the Media Council of Kenya.
Other media outlets also reported disruptions following the CA directive. Standard Group confirmed that its station, KTN has also been removed from free to air platforms. Citizen TV has also confirmed that their transmission station was raided by Communications Authority officials and armed police officers. Royal Media Services’ Hot96 Radio has reported that CA enforcement officers had raided their transmission site. Despite the blackout some of the media stations have kept streaming on YouTube, Facebook, and X and have urged audiences to keep the cameras rolling.
