TANZANIA BEATS KENYA IN 2025 GOVERNANCE RANKINGS

Tanzania has overtaken Kenya in the latest Chandler Good Government Index (CGGI) 2025, becoming Africa’s most improved nation in governance performance.
According to the global index, which measures government capabilities and effectiveness, Tanzania climbed to 78th position worldwide, rising four places since the index’s launch in 2021. The improvement is credited to digital governance projects such as the Digital Tanzania Project, the enactment of the Data Protection Act, and wider institutional reforms aimed at boosting efficiency and service delivery.
In contrast, Kenya stagnated at 94th place, the same ranking it held in 2024, after previously falling from 85th in 2023. Analysts warn that the lack of progress reflects a slowdown in governance reforms compared to regional peers.
Across Africa, Mauritius (51st) retained its lead, followed by Rwanda (59th), Botswana (61st), Morocco (75th), and South Africa (77th).
The CGGI 2025 findings underscore Tanzania’s steady rise in governance performance while highlighting Kenya’s challenges in sustaining momentum.
