THOMAS PARTEY JOINS VILLARREAL WHILE ON BAIL FOR RAPE CHARGES

Spanish La Liga side Villarreal have signed Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey on a one-year deal, just two days after he was released on conditional bail in the United Kingdom over multiple sexual offence charges.
The 32-year-old appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on August 5, facing five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault alleged to have occurred between 2021 and 2022 while he was at Arsenal. He was granted bail under strict conditions, including restrictions on travel and contact with alleged victims, and is due to appear at the Old Bailey on September 2.
Partey’s contract with Arsenal expired on June 30, paving the way for Villarreal to secure his signature. In a statement, the Spanish club said the midfielder “firmly maintains his innocence” and emphasised the presumption of innocence, while also condemning any form of violence or discrimination.
The signing has sparked debate among football fans and human rights advocates, with some questioning the timing and message of the move ahead of Partey’s upcoming court date.
