TRAGEDY AS ANOTHER PWANI UNIVERSITY STUDENT DIES WEEKS BEFORE GRADUATION

A cloud of grief hangs heavily over Pwani University in Kilifi county following the loss of two students in less than two weeks. The university, in a notice, announced the tragic death of Evans Kiplang’at, a fourth-year student who had completed his studies and was awaiting graduation in a few weeks time.
Kiplang’at reportedly drowned at Vidazini Beach, where he had gone to relax and swim with friends on September 14.
The young man was overwhelmed by strong winds and waves while swimming, which led to his tragic death. “It is with deep sorrow that we mourn the untimely death of Evans Kiplang’at Ngeno (EB02/PU/42706/21), who tragically lost his life at Vidazini Beach on September 14, 2025,” the notice read.
The university mourned the loss of the student describing him as a young man full of potential. Losing him was deeply heartbreaking. “Evans was just a few weeks away from graduating. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and classmates affected by this painful tragedy. May you find peace and comfort during this difficult time. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” the note, issued by the student association’s secretary general, read.
Antony Muteti, the student body president, urged fellow students to heed safety instructions at the beach. “Let us take care of ourselves. Lifeguards have warned against swimming in heavy tides, but we don’t always listen. It is unfair to our parents; safety starts with you,” he said. Kilifi county police officers arrived at the scene and transported the young man’s body to the Kilifi County Hospital mortuary.
