A somber mood has engulfed Kirinyaga County after a nine-year-old boy tragically drowned while swimming in the Sagana River on Sunday afternoon.
According to witnesses, the boy was playing near the riverbank with friends when he slipped into the deep waters and was swept away by the strong current. Efforts by locals to rescue him proved futile as he was quickly submerged.
Area residents immediately alerted authorities, and police officers from Sagana Police Station teamed up with divers to retrieve the body. After several hours of searching, the boy’s body was recovered and taken to the Kerugoya County Referral Hospital mortuary.
Local leaders have expressed their condolences to the grieving family, urging parents to be vigilant and warn children against swimming in the river, especially during the rainy season when water levels are high and currents are unpredictable.
Community elders have also called for safety measures along the Sagana River, including warning signs and patrols, to help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The incident adds to a worrying trend of drowning cases reported in parts of Central Kenya, with authorities reiterating the need for continuous public awareness on water safety.
