TREASURY RELEASES KSH.2.5 BILLION FOR UNIVERSITY CBAS AS UASU THREATENS STRIKE

The National Treasury has disbursed Ksh.2.5 billion to support the rollout of Phase 2 of the 2021–2025 Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs) for universities. In a statement on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Julius Ogamba appealed to the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) to withdraw the seven-day strike notice it had issued last week. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fully meet its obligations under the Return-to-Work Formula.

UASU Secretary General Constantine Wasonga, while announcing the strike notice, accused the government of failing to honour registered CBAs, stating that lecturers in public universities would suspend their services. He noted that CBA arrears have reached Ksh.3.27 billion despite a court directive requiring the government to allocate more resources to clear the dues. The strike notice, dated September 10, 2025, has been signed by 41 universities.
