The 22-year-old environmental activist Truphena Muthoni is now reaping the fruits of her bold push for climate action after being recognised by President William Ruto, following her 72-hour Guinness World Record tree-hugging feat. .

Hosting her at State House on Monday, President Ruto praised her resilience and creativity, describing her actions as a powerful reminder that environmental advocacy does not always follow traditional paths.

“What she has done is deeply symbolic,” the President said, noting that her endurance challenge had reignited public interest in conservation and climate responsibility.

In recognition of her efforts, Ruto appointed Muthoni an Ambassador of Kenya’s 15 Billion Tree Planting Campaign, the government’s flagship environmental restoration programme. He also awarded her the Head of State Commendation (HSC), one of the country’s highest civilian honours, citing her courage, leadership and commitment to environmental stewardship.

Muthoni’s journey, however, has not been without obstacles. She had initially planned to attempt the record in Brazil, but the effort stalled due to lack of financial and institutional support. Undeterred, she returned home and staged the challenge in Nyeri, enduring heavy rain and physical exhaustion — a decision the President described as a true display of determination.

Further support was announced during the meeting, with the Kenya Wildlife Service and the Kenya Tourism Board pledging a fully sponsored holiday for Muthoni and her team to help them recover from the demanding challenge. Additionally, the Ministry of Environment committed to facilitating her long-standing dream of travelling to Brazil to gain exposure to international conservation initiatives.

A lighter moment from the State House meeting circulated online after Muthoni jokingly asked the President how long he could hug a tree. Laughing, Ruto replied that cheering her on would be his role, leaving the endurance feats to her.

The President encouraged the young activist to continue pushing boundaries and inspiring fellow youth to take part in environmental protection efforts.

Muthoni’s accolades for both the 48-hour and 72-hour tree-hugging records mark a milestone that underscores the urgent need for youth- centered - climate action and environmental preservation in Kenya and beyond.
