UNIVERSITY STUDENTS RISK DEFERMENT AS MANDATORY ROLL CALL IS INTRODUCED

Students at the Technical University of Kenya (TUK) face the risk of deferment if they fail to comply with new attendance regulations, the university administration has warned.
In a notice issued to students, TUK stated that failure to sign the Nominal Roll or attain the required 75 per cent class attendance could lead to deferment of studies for up to two academic years.
The Nominal Roll, which must be signed by September 26, 2025, serves as the official register of students for the semester. The institution has tied it to a new electronic verification system, TUsoft, which monitors class attendance and determines exam eligibility.
The directive also links fee payment to registration. Students must either clear their fees in full or pay at least 60 per cent under the installment plan before signing the Nominal Roll. Without this, they will not be allowed to sit for end-of-semester examinations.
“The university wishes to remind all students that signing the Nominal Roll and maintaining 75 per cent attendance per course unit are mandatory. Non-compliance will result in deferment for one or two academic years,” the notice read in part.
The move has sparked mixed reactions among students, some of whom argue that the strict rules could unfairly affect those struggling with financial challenges. Others see the policy as a way of instilling discipline and accountability.
