As Kenya’s Gen Z-led protests gather momentum, cracks are emerging in the movement’s unity—particularly around the slogan WANTAM (We Want Accountability Now, Transparency And More). While some protesters embrace it as a rallying cry for justice and reform, others are sounding the alarm that it may be a government-planted narrative.

A section of Gen Z believes WANTAM is a subtle state strategy, designed to dilute calls for President William Ruto’s resignation and instead push for the completion of his five-year term. This suspicion has fueled debates online, with critics arguing that the phrase is being co-opted by National Intelligence Service (NIS) operatives and influencers sympathetic to the regime.

The situation has grown more tense with bloggers like Cyprian Nyakundi rejecting any association with Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, while Maverick Aoko defends him as a necessary figure in resisting Ruto’s leadership.
