American R&B artist Chris Brown has announced a social media hiatus, beginning with the deactivation of his Instagram account, after mounting criticism over viral performance clips reignited old debates about his treatment of women of color.
The controversy stems from his Breezy Bowl XX concert at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, where Brown invited sports journalist Kayla Nicole onstage during his performance of the 2007 banger "Take You Down". In front of a roaring crowd, Nicole stretched out on a red chaise as Brown performed a provocative lap dance before planting a kiss on her leg.
The backlash picked momentum after Nicole shared her perspective on Instagram, writing that she did it “for the teenage me blasting CB in her bedroom” and, more importantly, “for my brown girls.”
The performance clips circulated online reigniting the long-standing accusations of colorism against Brown, with many alleging he has a history of favoring lighter-skinned women. The backlash quickly gained momentum, prompting the singer to respond on his Instagram Story:
“Miss me with that colorist rage baiting!!!”
As criticism continued, Brown declared that he was stepping away from social media:
“Ima take a break from social media. Y’all done pissed me off long enough," Breezy wrote.
By Monday, his Instagram account—home to more than 75 million followers—had vanished.
This isn’t the first time Brown has been entangled in such allegations. In 2023, two women in the U.K. claimed they were denied access to a VIP section at one of his events due to their skin tone, accusations Brown flatly rejected.
Meanwhile, the " Residuals" hit maker is also grappling with legal troubles. At the onset of 2025 , producer Abe Diaw accused him of assault in London, alleging Brown struck him with a tequila bottle. Diaw filed a $16 million lawsuit, and the artist was later arrested on May 15, 2025, in connection with the case.
For now, Breezy’s decision to disappear from Instagram highlights the ongoing tension between his enduring global fanbase and the persistent controversies that shadow his career. However, his online hibernation is expected to be short lived following the rising demands and expectations from his fans.
