NJERI MAINA, MURANGO DROP ‘HIT AND RUN’ REAGGAE BANGER

Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina has made a return to music with a reggae love song titled Hit and Run, featuring Kirinyaga Senator James Kamau Murango and Baragwi Ward MCA David Mathenge in a playful production centred on relationships and commitment.

Released on Thursday, October 22, 2026, the track uses humour to address lovers who enjoy the benefits of a relationship but are unwilling to accept the responsibilities that come with it.

Through its lighthearted message, Maina encourages listeners to recognise warning signs early and walk away from partners whose intentions are unclear, rather than becoming emotionally invested in relationships that may lead nowhere.

The accompanying music video, shot at a resort and along the beach, brings the message to life through a series of playful scenes.

In one sequence, Maina rides a quad bike as a man playing a potential suitor follows her, seemingly determined to win her affection. The chase mirrors the song’s central theme of romantic pursuit without genuine commitment.

Murango and Mathenge also feature in the video, stepping away from their usual political roles to take on entertaining characters. The senator plays a wealthy man, while Mathenge appears as a watchman, adding a humorous twist to the production.

Their participation brings together three political figures from Kirinyaga County in an unusual collaboration that blends public life with entertainment.

Although widely recognised for her work in Parliament and human rights advocacy, Maina has previously explored music.

During her university years, she pursued the craft under the stage name Carola Jayne while associated with Grandpa Records. The release of Hit and Run marks a return to that creative interest after establishing herself in politics and the legal profession.

Maina is a trained lawyer who studied at the University of Nairobi before completing her postgraduate legal training at the Kenya School of Law. She was subsequently admitted as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya.

She was elected Kirinyaga Woman Representative in the 2022 General Election on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket, becoming one of the youngest members of the 13th Parliament.

Beyond her legislative work, Maina has been associated with human rights advocacy, including providing legal assistance to young people arrested during protests.

She has also previously spoken about selling second-hand clothes while at university to earn extra money, recalling how she would wake up early to source items for resale.

Her latest release offers another glimpse into her interests outside politics, with reggae providing the backdrop for a message aimed at people navigating modern relationships.

The song’s release comes as Kenyan politicians continue to explore ways of connecting with audiences beyond traditional political platforms. While Hit and Run focuses on romance rather than governance, the involvement of an elected woman representative, a senator and an MCA has brought an unusual entertainment angle to Kirinyaga’s political scene.
