Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu has responded after a video of her being barred from entering the presidential pavilion at Kasarani Stadium during the Kenya vs DR Congo CHAN 2024 match went viral. The incident occurred on Sunday August 3, 2025, shortly after President William Ruto had already arrived and entered the venue. Senator Nyamu, along with other high-profile figures, including Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura, attempted to access the VIP section reserved for the Head of State and his delegation but was turned away by security personnel.
Speaking out after the footage circulated widely on social media, Nyamu questioned the nature of the public response. “All politicians were getting blocked at the presidential pavilion entrance, but only Karen Nyamu is trending for it,” she remarked, expressing frustration over being singled out despite others experiencing the same.
She also posed a rhetorical question in Swahili, “Nimekuwa nani hii Kenya?” loosely translating to “Who have I become in this Kenya?”—a statement that captured both her surprise and dismay at the attention the incident attracted.
The opening match saw Kenya defeat DR Congo 1-0 in what is considered a strong start to the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN), co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. Despite the football success, the security fracas has sparked debate over protocol and access control at high-profile national events.
