KENYAN GEN Z HACK TANZANIA POLICE ACCOUNT AFTER DEPORTATION OF ACTIVIST

Dar es Salaam, Tuesday, May 20, 2025 — The official X (formerly Twitter) account of the Tanzania Police Force was hacked on Tuesday morning by individuals believed to be Kenyan Gen Z activists. The breach occurred amid rising diplomatic tensions between Tanzania and Kenya.

During the hack, the intruders posted several unverified messages, including a false announcement alleging the death of President Samia Suluhu Hassan. A live broadcast was also hosted briefly from the compromised account, which has approximately 468,705 followers. The last official post on the account had been made on Saturday, May 17.

Tanzanian authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the cyberattack. The police force regularly uses the X platform to share updates on criminal investigations and public safety campaigns.

The hack comes in the wake of a diplomatic standoff following the deportation of several Kenyan human rights activists from Tanzania on Monday. The activists had reportedly travelled to attend the trial of opposition leader Tundu Lissu, who is facing treason charges.

On the same day, President Suluhu issued a strong warning against foreign interference in Tanzania’s internal affairs.

“We have started to observe a trend in which activists from within our region are attempting to intrude and interfere in our affairs,” she said during the launch of the country’s new foreign policy. She instructed security and defence agencies to prevent such individuals from crossing into Tanzania.

“If they have been controlled in their country, let them not come to disrupt us. Let us not give them the chance; they have already destabilised their countries and the only remaining peaceful nation is Tanzania,” she added.

The incident has further inflamed regional tensions, with observers warning that relations between the two East African nations may deteriorate if diplomatic dialogue is not urgently pursued.
