Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has taken issue with reports that some Kenyan football fans deliberately bought tickets for the Taifa Stars’ CHAN clash against Morocco at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium—despite having no plans to attend the match.
Addressing the issue, Suluhu termed it as disrespectful , calling for CHAN to act against Kenya in regards to the allegations.
“Wakenya ifike mahali mjue mipaka yenu, mnatudhalilisha kwa kununua tikiti uwanja wa Mkapa na mnajua kabisa hamkuji. Naomba CHAN iwachukulie hatua Kenya kwa utovuu huu wa nidhamu."
The uproar came as East Africa braces for two key fixtures: Kenya set to host Madagascar on Friday at Kasarani Stadium from 3PM, while Tanzania to take on the highly rated Moroccan side later the same evening at 8PM in Dar es Salaam.
The alleged Kenyan ploy—meant to lock out Tanzanian supporters while backing Morocco—has sparked banter across the region and prompted a light-hearted reaction from Kenya’s Interior Security CS Kipchumba Murkomen.
Speaking during a fundraiser for APS Bomet, Murkomen quipped: “Congratulations to all Kenyans who bought tickets for the Tanzania game. Now kindly travel to Dar and make sure you support Morocco at Mkapa. If this banter with our neighbors continues, I’d be very happy to see a Kenya versus Tanzania final in Nairobi.”
Murkomen further acknowledged that, while it is in order to support our East African counterparts, Kenya will instead back Morocco, citing the recent back-and-forth in which Tanzania appeared to mock Kenya.
He then signed off with a cheeky Kiswahili-English twist: “Tutacheza kwa Kingereza, game yetu,” a remark that quickly caught fire online.
As the Tanzania–Kenya rivalry intensifies, expectations are rising, with fans eager to see Harambee Stars and Taifa Stars face off—perhaps in the finals—to finally settle the score and determine the stronger side.
