The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has reported a significant rise in revenue from the betting sector, collecting KSh13.2 billion in excise duty during the 2024/2025 financial year. This marks an increase from KSh10.6 billion in the previous year and surpasses the set target of KSh11.3 billion by over KSh1.9 billion.
In addition, betting tax collections hit KSh5.7 billion, outperforming the KSh5.5 billion target and reflecting a 22 percent year-on-year growth.
KRA attributed the revenue jump to its "Taxation at Source" strategy, which integrates betting firms' systems with the authority’s digital platform to allow real-time monitoring of transactions. The approach has enhanced compliance and reduced revenue leaks.
Overall, KRA collected KSh2.57 trillion in taxes for the year, exceeding its target of KSh2.55 trillion despite a slowing economy. The authority said it will continue to strengthen digital oversight to improve tax collection from fast-growing sectors like online betting.
