Ruben Amorim has sparked speculation over his future at Manchester United after suggesting that the leniency of his own players may have “spoken loudly” against him following their shocking Carabao Cup exit to Grimsby Town.

United endured a nightmare at Blundell Park, trailing 2–0 at half-time after goalkeeper Andre Onana was beaten at his near post for the opener before misjudging a corner that led to Grimsby’s second. Bryan Mbeumo pulled one back after the break and Harry Maguire snatched an equaliser in the dying minutes, but United were dumped out 12–11 on penalties when Mbeumo missed a crucial kick.

The proceeding five shoot outs positioned ManU at an edge over Grimsby , Onana saving one shot but United's Cunha , given the responsibility to deliver the fifth shoot out that would give the Reds a 5- 4 victory, went so weak giving Grimsby's Pym a smooth grab.

While Onana’s errors made headlines again, Amorim refused to blame the goalkeeper. Instead, he hinted at a far deeper problem within his squad, one that may point to a loss of trust in the dressing room.

“With all due respect, when you play against a fourth-division team, it’s not the goalkeeper, it’s everything,” Amorim said. “It’s the environment, it’s the way we face the competition. We show that performance today, so my players spoke, for me, really loud.”

Those words have been widely read as more than just frustration. The United boss appeared to imply that his players’ body language and lack of intensity were signs of something deeper — possibly that sections of the squad no longer want him in charge.

He added that Grimsby looked like the only team prepared to fight, despite United’s star-studded squad.

“I think the best team won, the only team that was on the pitch. The best players lose because one team can win against any group of players, and I think the team and the players spoke really loud today. That’s it. We lost, the best team won.”

Asked whether the defeat was another repeat of last season’s shortcomings, Amorim admitted the lack of progress made it even harder to accept.

“That is the problem. When you lose but see something new, it’s different. When you see something like today, it’s hard to talk about that.”

The United boss closed his press conference by apologising directly to the fans, acknowledging the painful nature of the result.

“I just want to say I’m really sorry for the fans. The support they gave me, the support that with all the support they help the team. I have nothing to say. I’m really sorry.”

The shock defeat leaves Amorim facing more than just questions about team selection. His cryptic suggestion that the players may have delivered their own verdict on him will only intensify scrutiny over whether he still commands the dressing room — or whether the squad is already pushing for change.

Amorim's men are now left to focus on the EPL, but the pace warmers have not been so welcoming, a loss against Arsenal and a draw against Fulham. Their next test comes against Burnley on Sunday, August 31, a match that already feels like a must-win. Anything less than victory could further jeopardise Amorim’s fragile grip on the job.
