MARTHA KARUA DECLARES 2027 PRESIDENTIAL BID

PLP Party leader Martha Karua has officially announced her candidacy for the presidency in the upcoming 2027 general election. Speaking to Kenyans in the United States during a gathering on Saturday, July 12, 2025, which was also attended by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Karua firmly ruled out the possibility of serving as a running mate again, a position she held in the 2022 elections. She emphasized her commitment to appearing on the presidential ballot, stating that she is actively working towards that goal. While she expressed willingness to support the opposition’s chosen flagbearer if it is not her, she made it clear she would not accept a deputy role again.

Karua underscored her long standing commitment to the rule of law, asserting that Kenya’s governance challenges stem largely from its continued neglect. During the same event, Karua addressed recent controversy surrounding President William Ruto’s directive to law enforcement to shoot looters in the leg during protests. She condemned the order as reckless and illegal, pointing out that any gunshot wound, even to the leg, could be fatal. She further criticized the directive as a violation of the Constitution and a threat to human rights, accusing the current administration of eroding the gains of the 2010 Constitution.
