NEMA GIVES COUNTIES 21-DAY ULTIMATUM TO ENFORCE STRICT WASTE RULES

The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has issued a 21-day ultimatum to all county governments to fully implement the Sustainable Waste Management Act and new Waste Management Regulations, 2024.
In a statement NEMA directed counties to ensure waste is segregated at source using colour-coded bins—green for organic waste, blue for recyclables and black for general waste. Waste transporters have also been ordered to carry only pre-sorted refuse.
The agency further demanded that dumpsites be reorganised to create separate sections for organic, recyclable, residual and landfill waste. It warned that failure to comply will attract enforcement action under Section 27 of the Act.
NEMA said the directive is aimed at promoting a circular economy and curbing environmental pollution. Counties are expected to provide the infrastructure and public awareness necessary for the transition before the 21-day deadline lapses.
