NICO WILLIAMS SIGNS NEW DEAL WITH ATHLETIC CLUB

Nico Williams has signed a new contract with Athletic Club that will keep him at the Basque side until 2025, rejecting strong interest from Barcelona this summer. Barca sporting director Deco recently stated that Williams had expressed a clear desire to join the Spanish Champions, while club president Joan Laporta confirmed they were ready to trigger his $68.3 million release clause. However, in a surprising development on Friday, Athletic announced that Williams has agreed to extend his stay at the club. His new release clause has now reportedly increased by over 50% from its previous amount. The 22-year old Spain international has been on Barca’s radar for some time, with the Catalan giants first attempting to sign him last summer.

This year, their pursuit intensified to the point that Athletic even filed a complaint with LaLiga over Barcelona’s financial conduct to block the move. The deal seemed so close to completion that some Athletic fans turned against Williams, vandalizing a mural featuring him on two separate occasions in recent weeks, but ultimately, Williams chose loyalty to his boyhood club, where he has played since the age of 11. Since debuting for the senior team in 2021, Williams was ranked up 167 appearances and 31 goals. He played a crucial role in Athletic’s 2024 Copa del Ray triumph, the clubs first majority trophy in four decades.

On the international stage, Williams has become a key figure under Spain couch Luis de la Fuente, earning 28 caps and scoring six goals, one of which came in the Euro 2024 final victory over England. With Williams now off the market, Barca will need to explore other options. Deco previously stated that signing a winger to support Lamine Yamal and Raphinha was a top priority for the summer.
