RAIL LINK BETWEEN MOMBASA SGR TERMINUS AND CITY CENTRE COMPLETE

Kenya Railways has completed the long-awaited commuter rail link connecting the Mombasa Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) Terminus in Miritini to the city centre.
The Ksh4.2 billion project involved the rehabilitation of 16.6 kilometres of the old metre-gauge line and the construction of a 2.3-kilometre bridge across the Makupa Causeway. The new line now connects directly to Mombasa Central Railway Station, easing access for passengers arriving and departing on the Madaraka Express.
Transport Principal Secretary Mohamed Daghar confirmed that test rides have been successfully conducted, paving the way for the launch of full operations.
The commuter service will feature new mini-stations at Miritini, Shimanzi, Changamwe East, and Changamwe West, as well as a pedestrian bridge linking SGR and MGR platforms. The upgraded Mombasa Central Station has also been fitted with modern facilities and parking space for over 100 vehicles.
Kenya Railways says the new service is expected to serve over 1,000 passengers daily, with train schedules synchronised with the arrival and departure times of the Madaraka Express.
Authorities project that the link will reduce road congestion, cut transport costs, and improve urban mobility by offering reliable and affordable last-mile connectivity.
