Key opposition figures Edwin Sifuna, Babu Owino, and Tim Wanyonyi were noticeably absent during President William Ruto’s recent tour of Nairobi.
The opposition has repeatedly accused the government of failing to address the high cost of living and governance challenges. Their refusal to attend the Nairobi tour appears to be part of a broader strategy to reject Ruto’s leadership. This raises concerns about whether bipartisan cooperation is possible in addressing Nairobi’s development issues.
Sifuna, the Nairobi Senator, has been vocal in criticizing Ruto’s leadership and economic policies. His decision to skip the event signaled his continued opposition to the Kenya Kwanza government.
Babu Owino, known for his strong stance against Ruto, also failed to attend, reinforcing the opposition’s resistance.
Tim Wanyonyi, the Westlands MP, was another notable absentee. His absence added to the perception that Azimio la Umoja leaders are distancing themselves from Ruto’s administration.
As the political divide deepens, it remains unclear whether the two sides will find common ground. The opposition’s decision to boycott the event sends a strong message about their stance. Whether this will lead to further political confrontations or eventual dialogue remains to be seen.
