SAMIA SULUHU PLEDGES 1 BILLION SHILLINGS TO TANZANIA’S NATIONAL TEAM

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has pledged a major financial reward for the Taifa Stars as they compete in the ongoing 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN). Although she did not attend the opening ceremony, her strong message of support resonated nationwide: a promise of nearly $400,000 (about 1 billion Tanzanian shillings) if the team wins the tournament. The bold incentive has energized the national squad. Head coach Hemed Suleiman expressed optimism, stating, “This isn’t just any tournament—it’s a historic opportunity. The President’s promise has given every player an extra reason to give their all.”

Tanzania began their campaign on a high note with a 2-0 win over Burkina Faso in Dar es Salaam. The solid performance has raised hopes of capturing their first-ever CHAN title. Backed by improved training conditions and enhanced logistical support from the government, the Taifa Stars are well-positioned to push for glory.

With East Africa hosting CHAN for the first time, the pressure and pride of performing on home soil are significant. The President’s generous pledge highlights the value placed on the team’s success and the nation’s ambition to make a lasting impact on the tournament.

This comes after President William Ruto pledged over 600 million shillings to the Harambee Stars if they emerge victorious and lift the trophy.
