EX MINISTER KILLS SELF AFTER BEING FIRED

Preliminary investigations have confirmed that former Russian Transport Minister Roman Starovoit died by suicide, just hours after being dismissed from his cabinet position.

Authorities say the incident occurred on Monday, July 7, in Moscow’s Odintsovo district, where the 53-year-old was found inside his car with a gunshot wound.

The Investigative Committee of Russia confirmed the incident, indicating that preliminary findings point to suicide. “The circumstances of the incident are being established. The main version is suicide,” said committee spokesperson Svetlana Petrenko.

According to local reports, including state-run TASS, Starovoit had sent his security detail a final message, sharing details on where and when to collect him. When they arrived, they found his lifeless body and immediately contacted emergency responders.

Before the unfolding, President Vladimir Putin had issued a decree removing Starovoit from his post. The official communication offered no explanation for the decision. Soon after, the Kremlin announced that Andrei Nikitin, former governor of the Novgorod region, would step in as ad lib transport minister.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov defended the move stating that Nikitin was appointed based on his experience and ability, noting that the Ministry of Transport holds a strategic role in advancing the country's infrastructure development goals.

Reports within the transport sector informed the Russian media that the shake-up had been expected since the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum in June. Although the Kremlin has remained tight-lipped about the reasoning behind Starovoit’s removal, international media outlets such as Reuters have linked it to a corruption investigation tied to his earlier tenure as governor of the Kursk region.

Starovoit had taken over the transport ministry in May 2024. Before that, he served as the governor of Kursk, a border region adjacent to Ukraine, at a time when regional leadership was under intense scrutiny due to ongoing military tensions.

Seen by many as a loyal public servant, his leadership in both regional and national roles drew mixed reactions. While he maintained close alignment with central government directives, some observers had raised concerns about his management style and regional oversight.

His unexpected death, so closely following his dismissal, has triggered shock and widespread speculation within Russian political circles. Many are calling for a clearer explanation, not only regarding the reasons behind his removal but also concerning the pressures he may have been under in the days leading up to his death.

As the investigation continues, Roman Starovoit’s passing leaves a cloud of unanswered questions hanging over a system where high-level exits often remain cloaked in silence.
