FORMER NIGERIAN LEADER BUHARI TO BE BURRIED ON TUESDAY

Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday evening in London, will be laid to rest in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, on Tuesday. The 82-year old former leader reportedly died at a private clinic in the UK while receiving treatment for an undisclosed illness. His death closes a notable era in Nigeria’s political history, as he served as civilian president from 2015 to 2023.

 Bashir Ahmed, Buhari’s former social media aide, confirmed through a post on his official X account on Monday afternoon that the burial will be held on Tuesday July 15, 2025 at 2.00 PM in his hometown. President Bola Tinubu sent Vice President Kashim Shettima to London to oversee the repatriation of Buhari’s remains for burial, which will be conducted in accordance with Islamic traditions and national protocols.

Buhari, who initially came to power as a military ruler following a 1980s coupe, made a political come back decades later. In 2015, he became the first Nigerian to unseat a sitting president through democratic elections and secured re-election in 2019. After leaving office in 2023, Buhari retreated from public life and spent most of his time in Daura. The former aide Bashir Ahmad described the late president as a fatherly figure whose memory will remain a personal treasure to those who worked closely with him. Buhari earned a devoted following for his brand of anti-corruption conviction politics, especially in Nigeria’s largely Muslim north.
