NELSON MANDELA INTERNATIONAL DAY MARKED GLOBALLY WITH CALLS FOR CLIMATE ACTION AND COMMUNITY SERVICE

People across the world are today commemorating Nelson Mandela International Day, an annual observance that honors the legacy of South Africa’s first Black president and global icon for peace, justice, and human rights.
The United Nations established Mandela Day in 2009, encouraging individuals to dedicate 67 minutes of their time to community service, symbolizing the 67 years Nelson Mandela spent fighting for social justice.
This year’s theme, “Climate, Food, and Solidarity,” calls attention to global challenges including climate change, food insecurity, and social inequality. The Mandela Foundation urged communities to embrace sustainable food systems and take urgent action to protect the planet while fostering unity and inclusion.
In Kenya and beyond, individuals and organizations marked the day through activities such as tree planting, feeding programs, environmental clean-ups, and donations to vulnerable groups. Schools and civil society groups held public forums reflecting on Mandela’s life and the importance of servant leadership.
“Mandela Day is not just a celebration; it is a call to action. It reminds us of our power to make a difference in even the smallest ways,” said one participant at a youth-led clean-up drive in Nairobi.
Nelson Mandela, born on July 18, 1918, spent 27 years in prison for opposing apartheid before becoming South Africa’s first democratically elected president in 1994. He died in 2013, but his legacy continues to inspire millions around the world.
The UN and the Nelson Mandela Foundation have called on global citizens to honour his memory not with words, but with action—emphasizing that meaningful change begins with ordinary people doing extraordinary things.
