The Council of Governors (CoG) has called for a consultative meeting today to discuss the ongoing standoff between the Kiambu County Government and the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU), even as the union indicated that it would organize mass demonstrations.
In a letter to the Kiambu County Executive Committee Member for Health, the CoG indicated that the meeting will be held at its Delta Corner offices in Nairobi at 9:00 a.m., with the aim of ending the impasse that has grounded medical services in the county for over four months.
The council stated that it had witnessed the exchange of correspondence between the Ministry of Health and the county on the failure of commencement of medical internships for the 2025/2026 cohort that has escalated the health crisis.
Meanwhile, KMPDU has threatened to stage mass protests in Kiambu on Monday — day 138 of the strike — against what it described as "hostile and unsafe" working conditions for doctors.
In a press statement to media houses, the union said the protest will begin with a press conference at Kiambu Level V Hospital at 9:30 a.m., followed by a march to the County Assembly and later the Governor's Office.
"Kiambu has become a hostile county. The crisis is seen in supervised deaths, extortionist medical fees, gagging of the media, and persecution of health workers," the union said in a Sunday press statement to media houses.
KMPDU has been strongly critical of the Governor Kimani Wamatangi administration, charging that the county government is to blame for the failure to break the months-long deadlock.
The union accuses the administration of ignoring a return-to-work formula signed last year and disregarding the suffering of the residents who have borne the brunt of the health crisis.
